My story with the girls... It's been a good few years since I was last in New Zealand on a thoroughly enjoyable heli-ski trip. The time before that I was shooting a ski movie called 'Coefficient Grab' which is when I met Tori Beattie. She was a young freestyle skier from Australia. She was a little bit shy, but strong and bright and I was impressed by her. After I left NZ and we released the movie, I didn't see her again. Years later I coincidentally met her mum in Verbier and the connection began again and Tori and I started skiing together the next time we saw each other.
On the day the front cover of 'The Snow Guide' by NZ Freeskier Magazine (above) was shot, I was injured and Tori was supposed to be getting a flight. But it snowed heavily over night and the conditions were SO GOOD!! We were just over excited and too drawn to the heavenly white powder snow. So Tori decided to delay her flight and I took some strong pain killers. It was well worth it!
As for Anna Smoothy (who is on the introduction page), the bond was instant. I knew her brother Sam Smoothy already so when I met her she was visiting him in Verbier. She is a genuinely great girl and I instantly knew there was not much I could fault in her. After a week of knowing her we were like old friends. And not long after she was in Bali with me. The day I shot the image of her, there were a few of the Kiwi crew including Tori Beattie and Dion Newport (FWT judge). But there must be something with the Kiwi's. That day Anna, Dion and myslef all had minor accidents and had to download and drink hot chocolate.
I just can't wait until I can get myslef over to New Zealand again!
